Buffet or banquet? How to choose the format for your corporate event
The format defines the character of the event
Even the exact same menu leaves a completely different impression depending on whether guests are seated at a table or standing with a plate in hand, mid-conversation. That is why planning a corporate event starts with choosing the format — the menu, the décor and the music come after.
Below we look at the four core formats offered by catering teams in Tbilisi, each with an indicative budget.
Buffet — free movement and networking
A buffet is the best choice when the main goal is mingling: presentations, product launches, team gatherings and receptions. Guests help themselves to canapés, mini desserts and drinks, move around freely and talk.
- Optimal guest count: 20 to 150;
- Indicative budget: 25–45 GEL per guest;
- Duration: 1.5–3 hours.
Keep in mind: a buffet cannot replace a full dinner — if the evening runs longer than four hours, guests will need heartier dishes too.
Banquet — a formal served dinner
A banquet means seated guests, a pre-agreed menu and table service. The format suits end-of-year evenings, award ceremonies and formal dinners with partners — occasions where protocol and festivity matter equally.
- Optimal guest count: 20 to 80;
- Indicative budget: 70–120 GEL per guest;
- You will need: a dining space, serving staff and a clear timeline.
Coffee break — short and effective
The indispensable companion of trainings, conferences and long working sessions. Coffee, tea, pastries, fruit and mini sandwiches — everything a 20–30 minute pause needs to recharge the participants.
- Any group size — from 10 participants to hundreds of guests;
- Indicative budget: 10–18 GEL per participant per break.
Georgian supra — hospitality at its fullest
When you want to show guests — especially international partners — true Georgian hospitality, nothing rivals the supra: an abundant table of cold and hot dishes, bread and wine. A supra starts from 60–100 GEL per guest; see the format in detail on the supra catering page.
Three questions before the final decision
- What is the goal? Networking → buffet; an award ceremony or festive dinner → banquet; learning → coffee break; hosting → supra.
- How many guests? A seated banquet gets logistically hard above 80 people — for large groups a buffet is the flexible way out.
- What is the budget? The same amount buys a buffet for 100 guests or a banquet for 40 — decide what matters more: scale or formality.
